Rabies is transmitted through bites. Risk of infection varies somewhere between 0.1 and 60%, depending on the severity of the wound and the speed at which it was cleaned. A doctor may prescribe you postexposure prophylaxis, a treatment involving human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and four doses of the rabies vaccine over a 14-day period. What to do if there are Bats in Your Home
Getting the rabies vaccine is a good idea if you’ve discovered that bats are living in your attic, as well. They may be out of sight for now, but there is always the risk of a bat falling into your living space via the chimney or the walls, or that one gets lost and flies into the house from outside. Ask your doctor about getting the vaccine while you get the help of a bat removal company. The vaccine will protect you from the illness should anything terrible happen. Bats are not aggressive, but it doesn’t hurt to be careful.
