Rabies Vaccine for Bat Exposure

Rabies Vaccine for Bat Exposure

Rabies is rare, though it is most prevalent amongst bats. Of the 49 cases in Ontario that were reported in 2020, 45 were bats. So, if you have been bitten by a bat, or if there are bats living on your property, you should consider getting the rabies vaccine. Rabies is a terrible virus that is fatal once symptoms appear. Immediately wash your wound with soap and water, then seek medical attention. Following treatment, give us a call and we will devise a bat removal and prevention plan. We provide comprehensive bat removal and exclusion throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Rabies is transmitted through bites. Risk of infection varies somewhere between 0.1 and 60%, depending on the severity of the wound and the speed at which it was cleaned. If you’ve suffered a bite from a bat, wash the wound with soap and water, then see a doctor right away. A doctor may prescribe you postexposure prophylaxis, a treatment involving human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and four doses of the rabies vaccine over a 14-day period. This will prevent you from getting sick with rabies and therefore stop the spread of the virus. Don’t wait. Visit a doctor immediately if you’ve come in contact with a bat.

What to do if there are Bats in Your Home

Getting the rabies vaccine is a good idea if you’ve discovered that bats are living in your attic, as well. They may be out of sight for now, but there is always the risk of a bat falling into your living space via the chimney or the walls, or that one gets lost and flies into the house from outside. Ask your doctor about getting the vaccine while you get the help of a bat removal company. The vaccine will protect you from the illness should anything terrible happen. Bats are not aggressive, but it doesn’t hurt to be careful.

Contact a wildlife removal company and a technician will devise a bat removal plan. In most cases, bats are removed by having a one-way door installed to the hole they are using to get inside the attic. This lets the bats fly out at night while preventing their return. They simply cannot crawl back in. To ensure that the bats do not find another way inside, the technician will also offer to seal and cover every other vulnerability on the roof, such as a gable vent or gap between the soffits. Once evicted, the bats will simply find another home.
